Recent Jewish Progress in Palestine
The Jewish Publication Society of America, Philadelphia 1915 - First separate publication, being a reprint from the American Jewish Year Book 5676. 12mo; 158pp; map as frontispiece, drab wrappers, slightly soiled, small chip to top right front corner, slightly larger chip to lower back corner, else very good.Henrietta Szold (1860-1945) served on the editorial board of the Jewish Publication Society of America from 1892-1916, during which time she translated many works from French, German, and Hebrew, including THE ETHICS OF JUDAISM by Maritz Lazarus (2 vol. 1900) and THE LEGENDS OF JUDAISM by Louis Ginzberg (7 vol. 1909-38). However, her fame rests as a Zionist (perhaps the most important female Zionist) and as the founder of HADASSAH, the women's Zionist organization in 1912. She served as the President of this organization from 1912-1926. This report gives historical background and goes on to trace the development of each settlement from the International Congress of Jews called by Theodor Herzl in Basle, 1897. Educational institutions, agricultural settlements, and other institutions are all detailed by Szold. Szold's first visit to Palestine was in 1909; this report from 1915, just six years later, was written by the woman who was at the center of the Jewish resettlement of Palestine. An important twentieth century document. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
