Chloe Marr.
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1946. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in white. Spine rolled and faded, a little foxing to endpapers. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his son on the front free endpaper, "C.R.M., with all my love. A.A.M." Shortly after the book's publication, Milne wrote a letter to St John Ervine on 4 August 1946: "Our boy is with us, and gets demobilized next week; after which he goes back to Cambridge for a year, chiefly to give the world a little time in which to cool. Having been at Trieste for the last year, he takes a gloomy view of Stalin and Titto. So do I; and of most other people". This was Milne's first novel for 13 years, and, though it would be his last, it was well-received: "'The Old Enchanter has done it again,' one of the American papers said. [There was] a general feeling that Milne had produced something rather original, certainly something quite different from anything he had written before".
