Year In, Year Out.
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1952. Octavo. Original blue cloth, title to spine in blue. Illustrations to text by E. H. Shepard. Spine rolled, spine and edges of covers faded. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. The dedication copy of Milne's final book, inscribed by the author to his wife Dorothy (née de Sélincourt) on the front free endpaper, "To my darling girl, this first copy of her book. Blue. May 6th, 1952". Milne was nicknamed "Blue" on account of his eyes, "the bluest eyes I have ever seen" recalled Nancy Spain. The book is dedicated to Dorothy, or "Daphne" as she was generally known, and contains a poem on the planting of daphne in the printed dedication. This collection of reflections and sketches was enthusiastically received in both England and America, with one reviewer noting that it "demonstrates Milne's erudition, wit and liberalism" (TLS), and another that "Milne discusses a hundred or so everyday subjects, but is delightfully surprising, witty and graceful" (New York Times). In August of that year, Milne wrote to a journalist who had sent him a letter of appreciation for the Year In, Year Out, and revealed that he had revived his affection for the character of Winnie-the-Pooh: "there was an intermediate period when any reference to him was infuriating; but now such a 'nice comfortable feeling' envelops him that I can almost regard him impersonally as the creation of one of my favourite authors". Two months after writing the letter Milne suffered a debilitating stroke and, though he lived for another three years, it put an end to his career as a writer.
