Large red/brown linen hardcover with brown leather spine. The front and back are beautifully decorated with blind stamped patterns. The front board shows the title in black, green and gold. The spine also shows gilded edges and stamped decorations. The edges are slightly worn. The allover condition is of the book is good. 45,5 x 35 cm, [8] 5-12 [74] pp. With 37 full-page engravings after illustrations by Gustave Doré. Each illustrated page is protected by a thinner (tissue guard-like) page. Der alte Matrose is a German translation of the 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834). This beautiful piece of romantic literature is about the adventures of an old mariner. After he and his crew get lost at sea, an albatross saves them by leading them out of the icy seas of the arctic to warmer waters. When the mariner decides to shoot the albatross his crew turns against him. This inducement is the starting point of a journey full of dangerous and supernatural events.
