The Works.
London: Newbery et al., 1761-1763 - 27 volumes, 7 inches tall. A superb collection of the first English edition of these great works translated by Dr. Smollett. 18th century runs in English are scarce, in this condition exceptionally so. Full speckled calf with gilt bands, triple labels and gilt centre tools. This edition was expanded to 38 volumes in 1774. An engraved frontispiece to each volume excepting volume 25, 2 folding plates in volume 26. Bookplate. Each volume has the neat ink inscription 'Mr G.F.Edwards Surgeon Bath' on the first blank. In the late 18th century Edwards was a member of the Royal College and writer and surgeon in Bath. A remarkable set of the works of the great French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher.
