Famous Masterpieces of the French, Dutch and English Schools : The Collection of C. K. G. Billings, Esq. From Fort Tryon Hall, New York
New York: American Art Association, 1926. Original binding of chocolate laid paper/boards; gilt lettering and insignia; ivory paper spine. Housed in a clamshell box of matching brown paper. 31 photogravure works, each with tissue guard. Oversize and a bit heavy at 5 pounds (2.25 kilos) and will require extra postage. The catalogue of works being offered for public sale, because Mr. Billings had "removed his home to California" and sold Fort Tryon Hall to John D. Rockefeller, who intended to donate the property to the city (New York) for a park for the Washington Heights area. The city declined the offer. Fort Tryon Hall burned in a spectacular blaze, and the property eventually did become a city park. This catalogue ncludes an eleven-point explanation on Conditions of Sale followed by a Foreword by Dana H. Carroll. Each of the paintings is annotated on the page opposite the image. A list of the 20 artists and their works appears at the back. The photogravure works were done by A.W. Elson & Co., Boston. The composition, presswork, and binding of the catalogue were done by the Lent & Graff Co., New York. A beautiful presentation of this catalogue. NF all around, but the copy is art museum ex-library with a bookplate inside front cover and card pocket inside back. Clean, tight, and in lovely condition. Very light shelf wear to the clamshell box, which is solid and protective.
