Recent endpapers, recent book-label and ink shelf-marks of the 'Bath Reference Library' to front endpapers, ink ownership inscription to head of title; 'Edwd. Tottenham / 1832 / London', short strip of clear tape to text of title-page, neat paper repair to gutter margin of A2, manuscript pagination numerals to first three gatherings, very occasional ink annotations, lightly foxed and dust-soiled. The second edition, printed in the same year as the first, of this analysis of the Regnans in Excelsis, the papal bull issued against Elizabeth I by Pope Pius V in 1570 defaming her to be a heretic and threatening those loyal to her reign with excommunication. Composed by bishop of Lincoln, Thomas Barlow (1608/09-1691) the resulting work forms a vitriolic attack upon the Roman Catholic Church, damning the pretensions of the papacy and contending claims of the churches ability to depose princes.
