Rio Grande Pacific Ocean Utah New Mexico California 1853 Jeff Davis RR map
1853 - Explorations and Surveys For a Rail Road Route From the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean War Department Route Near the 35th Parallel. Map No. 2 From the Rio Grande to the Pacific Ocean From Explorations and Surveys Made Under the Direction of Hon. Jefferson Davis Secretary of War1853By A. W. Whipple & J. C. Ives. (Utah / New Mexico / California / etc.) Issued Washington, D. C., 1853 by U. S. Government. Engraved by Selmar Siebert. Fine and uncommon 19th-century lithographed map. Captures this area of the American West with a level of detail and accuracy previously unseen. Map remains well preserved. Some light age wear or surface spotting / soiling which is visible within the photograph. Like all U. S. government maps issued for the explorations surrounding the search for railroad routes across the country, this map was printed on a relatively thin and fragile paper. This paper is now age-toned along the fold lines, and must be handled with care. Some splitting and separation at diff. fold-lines. Original fold lines as issued; map appears to have rarely been unfolded over the years. Top left side shaved slightly as often seen due to careless Government work at the time. Priced to reflect condition and flaws as described and visible- still a great looking mostly clean fresh example. Sheet measures c. 53 1/4" W x 24" H. Printed area measures c. 50" W x 22" H. Folio.
