"Fundamentals of Phrenology" "Robert Ralph Noel, son of Rev. Thomas Noel (1885-1853), an illegitimate son of Lord Wentworth, and cousin to Anne Isabella (1792-1860), Lady Noel Byron", was a close friend of Thomas Carlyle's friend Anna Brownell Jameson (1794-1860) and of Ottilie von Goethe (1796-1872), Goethe's daughter in law, and his is listed in the correspondence of Darwin - " was known as a "noted phrenologist in that golden age of phrenology."* "The work seems originally to have been published in two parts in 1841, the first volume containing the first three lectures, with lectures four and five in part two. OCLC note a couple of variant issues: the National Library of Scotland hold a copy containing part one with a title-page dated 1841 and part two with an 1842 title-page. Chicago and the National Library of Medicine note copies with just the 1841 title-page. Yale, Harvard and Utah cite copies of the present issue dated 1842.
