Original green cloth, gilt-lettered spine, blind frame to boards, central gilt vignette of a native craftsman to front, all edges untrimmed. Half-tone photographic frontispiece, 39 similar plates, folding colour map. Monogram bookplate of travel collector Humphrey Winterton to the front pastedown. Headcaps and tips very lightly rubbed, pale mark to front board, foxing to page-edges, very occasionally encroaching on margins, marginal chipping to preface leaves where clumsily opened. A very good copy. First edition of this "well-researched and now important ethnographical book" (Musambachime), containing a detailed account of local peoples, notably the Bemba (Awemba), as well as "interesting passages concerning hunting rifles, and on native methods of taking elephant" (Czech). Gouldsbury (1882-1916) joined the British South Africa Company in 1902, serving initially in Southern Rhodesia before joining the administration of Northern Rhodesia in 1908 and being promoted native commissioner for the province in 1910, with his base at Mpokoroso. He was killed on active service in Tanganyika with the 2nd King's African Rifles, having also published several volumes of poetry and two novels of Rhodesian life. Hubert Sheane was also district officer with the British South Africa Company and wrote a grammar of the Bemba language.
