Letter, Signed and Telegram (not in his hand). Both addressed to Curtis J. Hillyer
Washington, D.C., 1892. 2 items. 8vo. Fine. 2 items. 8vo. FIRST CALIFORNIAN JUSTICE, SECOND LONGEST SERVING AND FIRST TENTH SEAT ON COURT. Field was the first Californian appointed to the Supreme Court. Abraham Lincoln appointed him to the newly created tenth Supreme Court seat, to achieve both regional balance (he was a Westerner) and political balance (he was a Democrat, albeit a Unionist one). It would also give the Court someone familiar with real estate and mining issues. He is the second longest serving Associate Justice after William O. Douglas He was the brother of Cyrus Field. The letter reads in part "Thirty-five years ago today, I took my seat on the bench of the Supreme Court of Califiornia..." The telegeram reads : "Twenty years ago this day I took my seat on the Supreme Court of California andd you argued the first case..."
