Through Asia.
London, Methuen & Co. 1898. Royal 8vo. 2 vols. Publisher's original green cloth, image of excavation teams with camels blocked in gilt to upper covers, lettered in gilt, top edges gilt; pp. xx, 663; xii, 665-1278; photogravure frontispiece to each, numerous illustrations including some coloured, 2 large folding coloured maps; light spotting at front and rear of each, but otherwise a remarkably bright, fresh set. First English edition of the book that established Hedin's fame. 'This work does not claim to be anything more than a plain account of my journeys through Asia during the years 1893 and 1897' (Preface). Hedin's travels took him through the Pamir steppes, the deserts of Taklamakan and the Lob-nor region, Tsaidam and Southern Tibet. They form part of the tradition of Central Asian exploration catalogued by Hedin himself in the opening chapter of the work. A lovely set of this absorbing work. Yakushi H97b.
