An internationally famous opera librettist, poet, and Roman Catholic priest, Da Ponte had removed to the United States in 1805, where he introduced opera to New York City. He produced the first full performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni in the United States in 1825. The publication and importance of Da Ponte's Memorie was not widely recognized at the time, even in Italy. Montani's two-part review was originally published in the Antologia Fiorentia of Vieusseux (in April and May 1828). It was sent to Da Ponte by his friend Filippo Pananti after Montani had had it translated into English by his students and published in New York on the occasion of Da Ponte's 80th birthday.Scarce in the trade.
