Lectures on the Diseases of Infancy and Childhood
Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1850. First American Edition. His work in London in founding and supervising over a thousand children in the first ten years with careful observations and charting of 600 became foundational for physicians who treated children in the growing hospitals in mid-19th Century America. In its day it was the best work in English on the subject (Jeremy Norman, ed. Garrison-Morton, 6334). He had to warn many of the leading doctors on the use of opium in treating childhood diseases. His case studies became the pattern for serious medicine after the Civil War.
