The Portrait of a Lady.
London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1881. 3 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spines gilt, rules to front covers black, rear covers in blind, brown coated endpapers. Housed in a custom blue quarter morocco solander box. Ownership signature to title pages. Vol. I neatly rebacked with original spine laid down, vols. II and III joints repaired, tips repaired, hinges cracked but holding, a little minor foxing to contents. A very good set, rare in original cloth and highly desirable thus. First edition in cloth of James's highly acclaimed novel, the first of Connolly's one hundred key books of "the modern movement". Portrait first appeared serially in Macmillan's Magazine and Atlantic Monthly from October 1880. The book followed in November 1881 with a first impression of 750 copies issued in two variant colours of cloth (no priority has been established between the two). Most copies were issued with advertisements dated December 1881 but some, including this copy, have an earlier set dated April 1881, "probably inserted through error or through shortage at the bindery of the more contemporary catalogue" (Edel and Laurence).
