Together, these papers announce the beginning of what we now know as molecular biology, and represent the discovery of DNA, today a household word. It is hard to understate the importance of this work and although recent articles have disputed whose genius was primary in the discovery, it is clear that all of these scientists were key contributors. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962 for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nuclear acids and its significance for information transfer in living material.
