Mr. Citizen.
New York: Bernard Geis Associates, 1960 - Octavo. Original brown leather-backed patterned paper boards, titles to spine and front cover gilt on black ground, marbled endpapers, top edge pink. Minor browning to board edges, a couple of faint marks to boards; an excellent copy. Title page in red and black. With 16 plates of black and white photographic reproductions. "Author's" edition, one of 100 copies. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Hon. Clark Clifford, from his good friend over many years, with kindest regards, Harry S. Truman, Independence, August 27, 1960". The recipient, Clark Clifford (1906–1998), was a hugely influential Democratic advisor, holding the role of Counsel to the President during Truman's time in office. His purview encompassed both domestic and foreign affairs, as well as strategy for the 1948 presidential campaign. Clifford first came to Truman's notice in 1946 when, in his role as Naval Aide to the President, he co-authored the Clifford-Elsey Report. This brought George Kennan's sceptical views of Moscow into the Oval Office, and urged a tough line against Russia. Clifford shaped the central message of Truman's 1948 campaign; attacking the Republican "Do Nothing" Congress, sensing that a more aggressive approach would appeal to voters against Truman's opponent, New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey. Clifford urged Truman to recognise the State of Israel in May 1948, against the objections of the State Department. Clifford left the White House in 1950 to practice law in Washington, however, he remained a trusted advisor to subsequent Democratic presidents, including, when this book was presented in 1960, holding a seat on Kennedy's Committee on the Defense Establishment. In 1968 Clifford was made Secretary of Defence by Lyndon B. Johnson. With Clifford's bookplate to the front pastedown. The first edition of this work was published in 1953; a special edition of 1,000 numbered and signed copies were produced in 1960. This "Author's" edition was issued for presentation by Truman to his closest friends and associates. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
