Original half morocco, marbled boards, spine lettered and ornately tooled in gilt, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers; pp. vii, 428; 300 illustrations from photographs, charts, maps (one double-page); hinges lightly rubbed, embrowning to half-title and last page, a few minor spots to margins here and there only, else a very good copy. First edition, later translated into English as The Voyage of the "Why not?" in the Antarctic. After his success on the Français 1903-1905, Charcot set off on the Pourquoi-Pas? and surveyed along the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, sighting Adelaide Island, Alexander Island and Peter I Island and discovering Marguerite Bay, Fallià res Coast, and Charcot Island. He produced numerous accurate charts and maps of some 1250 miles of coastline. An important reconnaissance mission which later later served Shackleton and Scott. Charcot was one of 41 men who lost their lives when the Pourquoi-Pas? sank off Iceland in 1936. Rosove 65 ('uncommon'). Spence 256. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
