Harper, NY 1878 - VG books. 34 full page (including frontis') tissue guarded plates and 149 in text b/w illus. 8vo (xiv),522 & (ix),566pp. Vol 1 has 5 full p color maps & large f/o map of East Africa in rear pocket. Vol 2 has 1 full p color map, a double p chart, a f/o chart and the large f/o map of West Africa in the rear pocket. Each page of both vols; including the plates, maps and charts; has been carefully collated. Very colorful wrap around covers in gilt, light green, brown and black stamped into the boards. The jungle scene depicts Stanley in a large oar driven craft on the front cover wrapping to spine of a hovering swallow, finally extending around to back showing pink flamingos, all one continuous jungle scene. All lettering in gilt, as is the swallow, and the bands around the hats of Stanley and his crew. A very colorful scene whose colors and gilt are almost as bright as new. At least a careful comparison of the spine & front cover gilt shows no discernable difference. Internally "NEAR FINE"(including tissue guards), faint margin aging but no other staining or discoloration, & the first & last blanks with few very short closed tears. The large maps of East & West Africa with outer fold line wear. I have not unfolded these maps, that is for you, the buyer. Few minor flaws. Owners name on frontis' recto. All inner hinges carefully reinforced. 3 or 4 signatures just starting to loosen. Edges & extrems rubbed. Spine ends with few short closed tears. A very, very, nice copy. VG books. Gilt lettered dark green cloth. Very attractive copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
