The Life of Erasmus.

More particularly that part of it, which he spent in England; wherein an account is given of his learned friends, and the state of religion and learning at that time in both our universities. With an appendix containing several original papers. Octavo (203 x 125 mm). Contemporary brown calf, titles on morocco label to spine, decorative floral frame stamped in blind to covers, edges sprinkled red, marbled endpapers. Frontispiece and 19 plates. Bookplate to front pastedown. Boards slightly bowed, light bumps to tips; an excellent copy. First edition of Knight's biography of the Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus, who first visited England in 1498, later spending a number of years Cambridge. This copy with the frontispiece and plates listed in the list of cuts, with the additional plates as called for in Lowndes. Samuel Knight was an English clergyman and antiquary, he served as chaplain to King George II from 1730 to 1746 and as Archdeacon of Berkshire from 1735 to 1746. John Jortin, a subsequent biographer of Erasmus, commented "Dr Knight's work is indeed confused and not over elegant, but it contains many good materials" (Jortin, 617). From the library of 20th-century retail chemist and bibliophile Robert J. Hayhurst, with his bookplate to the front free endpaper and two newspaper clippings about Erasmus's time in England pasted to front free binder's blank. Hayhurst's extensive collection included well-preserved 18th-century bindings.
