Walter Scott A first edition, first printing of the Walter Scott edition. In two volumes. Translated by Nathan Haskell Dole. Original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt. With the Seal of the House of the Romanovs on front panel and spine. Publisher's Glossary of Russian-to-English words at rear of volume one, followed by 8 pages of ads. Rear of volume two with two pages of ads. A very good+ set with clean blue cloth. Head and tail of spines slightly worn. Sides of spine on volume two worn and rubbed. Some corners rubbed. Previous owner's small bookplate on front pastedown of each. No other previous owner's markings. Text free of signs of handling, no browning nor foxing, no smudges. Outside page edge very clean, with no fingerprints. Tight, square copies. Hinges sound and sturdy, however paper along front hinge of volume two has been reinforced with a thin strip of non-acetate repair for long-term sturdiness. Small rubbed spot on the spine title of volume two, after the first n' in Karenina.
