Familiar Chinese Faces.
Shanghai: McTavish [sic.] & Co. Ltd.,, c.1910. A Selection of Figure Studies of Everyday Life from Photographs. Quarto (280 × 220 mm). Wire-stitched in original textured pictorial light card wraps, punched and with cord ties. 24 well-reproduced half-tone plates tipped onto 18 grey marl card leaves, printed captions and frames. Wraps somewhat rubbed, soiled and frayed, but remaining pictorially and textually complete on the front panel, contents a little browned at the margins, but remains about very good. First and only edition, uncommon Copac lists SOAS only, OCLC locates copies at National Library of Israel, Stanford, Universities of Hawaii and Victoria, BC. Attractively produced, if fragile photobook of Shanghai life, a nicely-observed series of "types". The photographer was an employee of MacTavish and Lehmann, "chemists, druggists and aerated water manufacturers", the company had a photography and pharmacy shop at No 1 The Bund, Shanghai - and later at the Hongkew Medical Hall at the junction of Broadway and Soochow Road. Alongside their operation as dispensing chemists, perfumers, importers of surgical instruments, and sellers of cameras, film, and a complete range of photographic accessories, they also ran a dark room for the use of amateur photographers.
