American Wood Type 1828-1900. Volume I [all published].
Kelly, Kansas City, Missouri, 1964. 17 1/2 x 22 1/2. Book of 12 pages printed in three columns on tan paper, in comb binding of printed orange wraps. Plus 97 broadside specimens of the wood types. All laid into a cloth solander box. Mild fading and a bit of wear to box. Contents fine. No. 4 of 45 signed copies. Beautifully printed (no easy task with wood type) by Kelly on a hand press, mostly in black with a bit of red, and some decorative pieces. In his text, Kelly describes each specimen, giving as much information as possible about the each type--its name, type of cut, manufacturer, first showing, source of design, missing components. An extraordinary visual history of American wood types, with a huge range of examples. There are only two auction records for this in the last 45 years. A rare specimen, with almost all copies (at least 32 copies) held in institutions.
