Engraved throughout with plates, portraits, vignettes, and initials by John Pine. Bound by Tout in full burgundy crushed morocco, a.e.g., the spine densely gilt in floral designs, the covers similarly decorated with dense floral cornerpieces, fancy dentelles. "Pine's complete command of his craft makes this the most elegant of English eighteenth-century books in which text and illustrations alike are entirely engraved." (Ray. English. p. 3.) "Pine, a pupil of Picart, was our best native engraver during the first half of the [eighteenth] century... His Horace is engraved throughout, text and illustrations, and possesses the delightful unity that such books always have. Its lettering with its strong contrasts between thick and thin strokes may well have influenced Baskerville and Bodoni in their type design. Its vignettes make it one of the few English books that can be compared with French work of the time for delicacy and finish." (Bland. A History of Book Illustration, p. 216.) De Ricci-COhen p. 497. See Blumenthal. Art of the Printed Book, plate 72.
