The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Translated into the Choctaw Language; Pin Chitokaka pi Okchalinchi Chisus Klaist In Testament Himona
New York: American Bible Society, 1848. First edition.. Hardcover. Good. Thick 8vo. 818pp. First edition of the first complete New Testament in Choctaw, a language of the Muskogean family spoken by Native Americans in parts of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, later in Oklahoma. Translated by A. Wright and C. Byington. A well used, stained copy. The first hundred pages or so evidence a light stain, which has blotted an 1860 inscription on the reverse of the title page causing it to show through; lacks ffep; textblock generally soiled and stained showing more evidence of use than abuse; some signatures sprung. Original full calf binding, worn at edges and corners, with the spinal lettering piece partially perished. Pencil signature of Sophia Pitchlinn (?) dated 1853(?) on the rear free endpaper. A poor to good copy only, but uncommon as well as significant. Housed in a custom morocco-backed clamshell case. Darlow & Moule 3051. In Choctaw.
