The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, begun in the year 1641. With the precedent passages, and actions, that contributed thereunto, and the happy end, and conclusion thereof by the King's blessed Restoration, and return, upon the 29th of May, in the Year 1660.
Oxford, Printed at the Theater, 1731-32 - 6 volumes, octavo (212 x 127 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, two-line gilt rules either side of raised bands, gilt numbered direct in third compartment, two-line gilt border on sides, red speckled edges. 19th century armorial bookplate of Nugent Howard; 20th century bookplate of Robert Hayhurst (in volume I). Some light abrasions to bindings, a number of gatherings a little browned. A very good set. 88 engraved portraits (largely by Michael Vandergucht after Lely and others), 4 folding plates (plan of Naseby, view of Edge Hill, flight of Charles II after Worcester, Boscobel House & grounds), 3 folding maps (south & north parts of Britain, Ireland). The last octavo edition of the eighteenth century, bound here in unsophisticated period calf - almost certainly a trade binding - unlettered and plain but very appealing. First published between 1702 and 1707 (with the first octavo edition appearing in 1705-06) Clarendon's great History has "remained in the mind because of his literary achievement—the fashioning of the most sophisticated and finely balanced history yet written in English (or written for a long time afterwards)—and for an unmistakable rhetorical voice. Clarendon's writings—and his own life—were steeped in the literary stoicism of the early seventeenth century; but in the History he created a distinctive work of art based on a highly wrought style, a forensic dissection of character and issue, and a sense of the depth of individuals' moral responsibility for their action" (ODNB). The History of Oxford University Press I p. 428.
