Thomas Dobson, Philadelphia 1794 - 5 1/4 X 8 1/4 Inches. 363 + 168 PP. Two First Edition volumes by Benjamin Rush bound as one. Contents include: An Account of the Bilious Remitting Yellow Fever 1794 and Six Introductory Lectures, to Courses of Lectures, Upon the Institutes and Practice of Medicine, Delivered in the University of Philadelphia. The latter volume being published by John Conrad in 1801. Full calf leather binding with title patch on spine, front cover detached, back cover starting. Binding is rubbed. Lower third of ffep is torn out. Contemporary ink notations on front and back end pages that list births and deaths of the Jordan and Prichard families circa 1810. Alson in ink on verso, blank of the title is a gift inscription to Daniel Fisher signed, "Edward Fisher" 1794. ALSO SIGNED ON THE FRONT INSIDE COVER BY "JNO HERBERT CLAIBORNE, Petersburg, 1852" John Herbert Claiborne (1828 - 1905) of Brunswick County Virginia was a graduate of Randolph-Macon and UVA with a Doctor of Medicine. He also received MD degrees from the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphis and the Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1851 he came to Petersburg, Virginia, and began to practice medicine. He joined the Confederate Army on April 19, 1861 and was made Surgeon-In-Chief of all military hospitals in Petersburg in 1864 when General Lee occupied the city. During the siege of Petersburg he was severely wounded, and was captured just before the surrender at Appomattox. He was elected to the Virginia Senate; and the Virginia House of Delegates; a member of the Medical Society of Virginia; a fellow of the American Medical Association and Southern Surgical and Gynecological Society of Virginia; a corresponding fellow of the Gynecological Association of Boston; a fellow of the Victoria Institute of Great Britain; and of the International Medical Associaton; also fellow of the American Health Association, and an honorary alumnus of the University Medical College of Virginia. He was Vice-President of the Medical Association of the Confederate Army and Navy, 1876. (Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography by Lyon G.
