Tihuanacu; The Cradle of American Man. / Tihuanacu; La Cuna Del Hombre Americano. Volumes I and II (2 Vols. in 1).
J. J. Augustin, New York 1945 - Hardcover. 2 Vols in 1. Large Quarto. 158pp, + lxiv (plates), 246 + plates. Original tan cloth. Color frontispieces and black and white and some color plates. Numerous maps and diagrams, some folding. Parallel English and Spanish text. Posnansky's monumental study of the Pre-Columbian archaeological site in western Bolivia. These first two volumes (in one) are complete in themselves - the first volume explores the geography and history of the site, as well as some of the buildings and their associated iconocraphy, the second pays particular attention to the temples, religion, and symbolism of the site. Third and fourth volumes (again in one) were issued twelve years later (1957) and apparently deal mainly with ceramics and physical anthropology (mummies and skulls). Presentation inscription from the author's wife to a friend on the half-title page. Light rubbing to cloth, and text block a little shaken as almost inevitable with a book this size and weight. Merest hint of pale foxing to a few leaves. Edges dusty. Still a VG + copy - no dust jacket (believe none issued?). A large heavy volume, additional shipping will apply. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
