Plan de la ville kapitale de Moscou.
Moskva Selivanovskiy -27 1826 - Lithographed map in 10 sheets (96 x 67 cm), with 10 lithographed views on both sides of the map, cut and pasted on linen, with green silk boarder, folding into original cardboard slipcase; some light spotting and soiling, slipcase rubbed, joints partly split. Index in Russian and French (23.5 x 14.5 cm): 43 pp., original marbled wrappers. Rare plan of Moscow illustrated with ten fine views of the main landmarks of the city; complete with explanatory pamphlet in French and Russian. Born in 1769, Savinkov belongs to the post-Makhaev generation of Russian map engravers and publishers which flourished after Paul I's reforms of the cartographic industry in Russia. Shortly after ascending the throne, Paul I, concerned with the poor quality of maps and atlases produced within the Russian Empire, issued a decree on 13 November 1796 aimed at centralising the cartographic production. This lead to the creation of His Majesty's "Maps Depot", with a special engraving section formed in 1798 and a Geographical Department in 1800. Savinkov entered the Depot in 1799 and realised there one of the earliest postal maps of the Empire (in 1808). Very rare. Russian State Library holds a copy of the explanatory pamphlet but not the plan itself; WorldCat locates a copy of the pamphlet and map only in the Library of Congress. Russian State Library, Katalog planov Moskvy (Moscow, 1998), N59 (index only); Klepikov XXVI; Not in Gubar (Savinkov's Plan of Saint Petersburg, 1825 only, No2389); not in Rovinskiy, Slovar graverov, 857.
