After the taking of the island by the Japanese the sabotage done to the oil refinery was quickly repaired and the island also became important to the Japanese. By 1945 the tide of the war had turned and the island became well known as the first stage of the Allied campaign to take Borneo back from the Japanese. Australian troops landed on Tarakan on May 1st, 1945 anticipating a short battle however it wasn't until June 21st that the Australian, United States and Dutch forces who were involved in this operation, code named "Oboe One" were victorious. Victory for the Allies on Tarakan came at the cost of a great many lives, most particularly among the Japanese forces. .
