The Picture of Dorian Gray
Charles Carrington, Paris 1908 - Quarto. 312pp, Original white three-quarter faux vellum over gray boards with gilt ruling on covers, gilt lettering on spine. Publisher's disclaimer glued in: "First Illustrated Edition of the "Picture of Dorian Gray" This illustrated edition was intended to be issued in 1908, the date given on the title-page; but, after the text had been printed, the Artist unfortunately fell ill, and this is the reason why the book has not appeared before the present year, 1910. The Publisher." Frontispiece engraving with printed tissue guard. Philosophical novel with strong themes from Faust. Illustrated with 6 additional full page engravings by Eugene Dete from drawings by Paul Thirat, each with a printed tissue guard. First published in Lippingcotts Monthly Magazine in 1890 it offended the moral sensibilities of a number of book reviewers, despite the fact that important material had been deleted by the editor of the magazine, J. M. Stoddart. Binding with light wear along edges and vellum slightly rubbed with small chips at corners, minor at head and tail of spine. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
