Harris' Widow and Brothers. 1816. - sm4to,25.3cm, The First Edition, Large Paper Issue, Limited to 12 Copies,viii,150,[4]pp., with 9 copper engraved plates (8 hand-coloured)including frontis, 2 text vignette illustrations, first and lasttext pages, on hand made watermark paper, in the original crushedhalf dark green morocco, raised blind ruled bands, gilt spinetitles, pebbled green cloth boards, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., twoengraved heraldic book plates, in fine condition, very rare.Author's Signed Presentation, "Alex Pringle Esquire M.P. ofWhythank, . with the Author's best respects. June 14th, 1836". Pringle's bookplate on this front endpaper. Together with:Autograph Letter Signed; laid in, from the Author, same date, onesheet, folded to 28.6x 11.3cm, "I regret that the binder has madesuch a *bungling job in the management of the plates - To remedythis is not in my haven, as the copper plates are no longer in mypossession, I trust therefore you will excuse their irregularity. ". Alexander Pringle, of Whyteband and Yair, was the Member ofParliament for Selkirkshire. and obviously an avid angler - A FineCopy of a Rare and Important Work. Westwood & Satchell p20. A veryscarce copy of the large paper edition, one of only 12 copiesbelieved to exist. Heckscher 120. Starkman p61. One of the earliestbooks to include colour plates of tied flies. This is consideredthe precursor to Ronalds' Flyfisher's Entomology, 1836, and is onlythe second work, (after George Scotcher's Fly-fisher's Legacy,Chepstow, 1800) on angling to be illustrated with hand-colouredengravings of trout & salmon flies. According to Westwood &Satchell "Twelve copies of the first edition were in 4to., colouredwith greater care, and published at two guineas."* the plates areplaced high on the page, the strike line near or touching the topmargin.
