Willis & Sotheran 1857 - This famously illustrated work comes bound in the publishers blue cloth, stamped in gilt and blind, in an oblong 8vo format (11 3/4" X 9 1/4"). The binding shows some wear and scuffing with a bubble in the cloth on the rear board, ever so slightly cocked. The work is complete with 62 very attractive hand colored plates many of which are folding double page. Plate #30 is bound as a frontis. Plates are from very good (only a hand full with light toning and some with transfer as no tissue guards were used) to fine (virtually no faults) with most being the latter.Bookplate and pencil inscription inside front board/fly. The text describes the Feudal system, knighthood and its importance to the history of the middle ages. Translated from the German edition which precedes this edition. Often broken up and scarce in the trade. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
