Marooned (Original screenplay for the 1969 film, early draft for Frank Capra version)
Culver City, CA: Columbia Pictures, 1965. Early second estimating draft script for the 1969 film. This draft would be entirely unused in the final film, as director Frank Capra would leave the project as it began shooting. Based on Martin Caidin's 1964 novel. After a crew of three astronauts are working in an orbiting space lab, Jim Pruett (Crenna), Clayton Stone (Franciscus) and Buzz Lloyd (Hackman) are ordered to return to Earth by the head of the program, Charles Keith (Peck). They soon find however that their rockets will not fire and they are unable to return. With only 42 hours of oxygen remaining, and few options available, Ted Dougherty (Janssen) proposes a rescue mission using an experimental spacecraft that has yet to be tested. To make matters worse, a hurricane is approaching the launch site. Early efforts to bring "Marooned" to the big screen began with Capra and screenwriter Walter Newman, as seen here, though Newman's script would prove too lengthy and costly for the studio to produce (though it took eleven drafts in order to decide so). Capra fought through countless other production difficulties including casting, coordinating with NASA, and believing the studio was attempting to push him off the project, before simply walking away from the film, to be replaced by John Sturges. Winner of an Academy Award (Best Effects), and nominated for two more. Shot on location at Cape Canaveral in Florida. Gray titled wrappers, noted as Second Estimating Draft on the front wrapper, production No. 8742, dated June 30, 1965, with credits for producer Capra. Title page present, dated June 27, 1965, noted as Fourth Draft, with credits for producer-director Frank Capra and for screenwriter Walter Newman. 204 leaves, mimeograph, with revision pages throughout, dated between 6-13-65 and 6-14-65.
