- De Backer & Sommervogel VI, col. 1640; Landwehr, German Emblem Books 494; Praz, p. 468. Second or third edition in the original Latin of a beautiful, instructive emblem book by the Jesuit Franz Reinzer (1661-1708), curiously mixing science and philosophical politics, including moral lessons. Quotations from scientists and classical philosophers accompany beautiful emblems with meteorites, flying dragons, lightning, comets, rainbows, fata morganas, earthquakes, underground fires, minerals, metals, etc., with references in the margins and allegories of politics and public life and wise lessons drawn from them. Both the texts and the emblems show the influence of the Jesuit scientist Athanasius Kircher. Wolfgang Josephus Kadoriza or Catoriza was a painter, active at Linz between ca. 1697 and 1730. With the engraved armorial bookplate of Christoph Wenzel, Graf von Nostitz (1643-1712) of Schloss Lobris in Lower Silesia, and the bookplate of Bob Luza (1893-1980). With about 1 mm shaved off the head of the frontispiece on the right side, but generally in fine condition. The binding very good. A beautiful meteorological Jesuit emblem book influenced by Athanasius Kircher.
