The Fairy Picture Album. 40 coloured plates mounted on manilla, 60 subjects illustrated. Every page coloured.
London: T. Nelson and Sons, [c. 1895] - Small quarto. Original pale blue cloth over bevelled boards, spine lettered in black, elaborate blocking on front cover in gilt, black & red (with an illustration of Jack the Giant-Killer), blind-stamped floral cartouche on back cover. Neat ownership inscription of "Leslie Scholefield 1906" (on front free endpaper). Spine slightly rolled, covers a little soiled, a touch of thumbing in places. A very good copy. 40 chromolithograph plates. First edition of this very scarce collection of chromolithographs: unrecorded by Copac and OCLC locates only the copy at Princeton (apparently containing just 38 plates); although we have located a copy at the University of Virginia Library ("This is no ordinary scrapbook album; this is an album of vibrant illustrations"). Included here are scenes from Old Mother Hubbard, Jack the Giant-Killer, Tom Thumb, Little Red Riding-Hood. the Babes in the Wood and Gulliver's Travels; at the end there is an attractive "nations of the world" alphabet: B is for Bedouin, C is for Chinese, D is for Dyaks, O is for "Otaheitians" (Tahitians), Y is for Yankee and Z is for Zealander. [Attributes: First Edition]
