Fringilla, some tales in verse. Pictured by Louis Fairfax-Muckley, with III drawings by James Linton. London: Elkin Mathews, 1895; [with:] — Fringilla, or Tales in Verses.
Cleveland: Burrows Brothers, 1895 - 2 copies, octavo. London edition: original pale green cloth, titles and decoration to spine and front board dark green, vignette blocked to front board dark green, top edge green; illustrated by Louis Fairfax-Muckley and James Linton. Cleveland edition: original buff cloth-backed green boards, titles to boards black and red, vignette to front board black, top edge gilt; illustrated by Will H. Bradley. Housed together in a custom calf-backed solander box. Ownership signature to front pastedown. Spines very slightly rolled, the first US edition with light foxing to contents and slight wear to edges. An excellent pair. First edition, together with the first US edition, limited issue (number 472 of 600 copies). With the ownership signature of James Warren English (1837–1925) to the front pastedown of the London edition; he was mayor of Atlanta, Georgia, 1881–83. An interesting pair of this work by the author of Lorna Doone, showing the contrasting treatment given to the book either side of the Atlantic: the London edition showing a strong arts and crafts influence, the Cleveland edition illustrated in art nouveau style. [Attributes: First Edition]
