Folio (16" tall). Bound "Japanese Style' (French fold) and tied with cords. Illustrated with collotype prints and many hand-colored albumen photographs, also with ten color xylograph reproductions of Japanese flower paintings. Each volume bound in a different color of color-blocked silk over beveled boards with mounted paper cover labels. "...this pinnacle of fine book production is one of the most beautifully crafted of all photographically illustrated books... The volumes' art advisor was Okakura Kakuzo, called 'the William Morris of Japan' for his role in documenting and preserving the arts and crafts of his homeland. Okahira was the director of Tokyo's Imperial Art School and curator of the Imperial Household Museum; as a student at Tokyo University, he had been a disciple of the transplanted Bostonian Ernest Fenollosa, one of the greatest Japonists of all time."
