Epics and Romances of the Middle Ages (Signed By Arthur Edward Waite)
London: Swan Sonnenschein, 1890. Sixth edition, hardback bound in the original decorative cloth with gilt titling to spine and front, all edges gilt. 22 × 14cm. 488pp. This copy has been signed and inscribed by Arthur Edward Waite, the poet, scholarly mystic and writer on occult and esoteric matters. The inscription reads "To G J Stuart-Menteath, with best wishes for Xmas, 1890 from Arthur Edward Waite". Granville Stuart-Menteath and his family were close friends of A E Waite's. Granville married Theodora Lakeman, whom it seems Waite was very much in love with. He went on to marry her sister Ada in 1888, who was a witness at Stuart-Menteath's and Theodora's wedding. This illustrated book describes the romances, legends and epics of the Middle Ages It is divided into three sections: The Amelung and Kindred Legends; The Nibelung and Kindred Legends; and The Carolingian Legends, Legends of King Arthur and the Holy Grail, and Tannhauser. Condition: This copy is quite well worn but rare with A E Waite's inscription. The blue cloth is rubbed quite heavily to the corners and faded to the rear board. The spine is faded a little. Internally, the hinges are cracked but not open, the binding is secure if a little pulled. There is a small 1cm loss to the page with Waite's signature, but the signature and inscription remain intact. The main body of text is in good, clean condition. A fair copy but made worthwhile with the inscription.. Signed. Sixth Edition. Decorative Cloth. Good Plus.
