Glasgow: Printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis 1749 - Small 8vo, 156 x 95 mms., pp. [viii], 148, contemporary tree calf, gilt spine red leather label; issued without portrait, some staining to inner margin of title-page, but a very good and attractive copy, with the ownership inscription "John Gladstone/ Liverpool/ 1799" on the top margin of the title-page, and the bookplate of Fasque House, Aberdeen, on the front paste-down end-paper. William Hamilton of Bangour (1704 - 1754) took part in the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745, leaving him to flee Britain first landing in landing in Göteborg and then making his way to France. "While he was in exile Hamilton's Poems on Several Occasions was published anonymously under the editorship of Adam Smith by the Foulis Press, Glasgow, in 1748 and 1749" (Murray Pittock, ODNB). Gaskell 131. ESTC gives pagination of [6], 148, but in this copy the first leaf, followed by a blank leaf, two pages of Contents, and two pages of Preface. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
