Danse à cloche-pied des indigènes de l'ile de Paques
Plate from: Voyage autour du monde sur la frégate la Vénus, pendant les années 1836-1839 ... atlas pittoresque. [Paris : Gide, 1841]. Lithograph with hand colouring,172 x 272 mm; in fine condition; framed. The voyage of the Vénus, under the command of Abel du Petit-Thouars, was critical to the establishment of a French colonial presence in the Pacific, as well as for the promotion and protection of French commercial activities around the globe. It achieved its primary objective of establishing a French protectorate over Tahiti and the Marquesas. In 1838 the expedition visited Easter Island. This lithograph by Blanchard, after the original ship board drawing by Louis-Jules Masselot, was included in the monumental Atlas pittoresque volume of du Petit-Thouars' voyage account. It shows a "hopping dance" being peformed by native Easter Island men on the deck of theVénus.
