Signed manuscript letter from the Viceroy of India, Marquess of Lansdowne, to the Begum of Bhopal, 1892.
Govt of India, Calcutta 1892 - Marquess of Lansdowne, Viceroy of India 1888 - 1894 A manuscript letter written in palace script in a palace script on two sides of a bifolium of Viceregal paper embossed in gold with the royal coat of arms. Thie letter is addressed to the recipient, Her Highness Nawab Shah Jahan, G.C.S.I., C.I., of Bhopal and thanks her highness for her new year's good wishes. The Viceroy also refers to hos recent visit to Bhopal which gratified him. It is signed "Lansdowne" and dated Fort William [Calcutta], the 1st of February, 1892. A cop of a letter in Arabic is tipped to the inner blank leaf [probably a translation of the Viceroy's letter]. The Lansdownes were to develop a very good relationship with the Nawab Begam which continued after they left India, something of which not all Viceroys were capable. The letter is in very good condition: there are small holes to the gutter margins where it has been stab sewn into a folder. Size: Folio [Attributes: First Edition]
