The Nuremberg Chronicle
Los Angeles: The Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop, 1950. Limited edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Folio. (16), 61, (3). One of 300 numbered copies. Finely printed letterpress, some pages in two colors. Blue cloth binding printed in red on the spine and with the boards printed in a pictorial design (based on a woodcut from the Chronicle) and red title. Map end papers, also based on a woodcut from the Chronicle. With a leaf from the pirated Augsburg Latin edition of 1497. The leaf is folio lxix, covering the end of the Fifth age of the world, and concluding with the fall of Babylon. There are 15 woodcuts, 14 of historical figures as well as a 15th larger cut: of a city (Babylon) in ruins. The 14 woodcut figures depict people connected with the Babylonian Captivity: Nabuchodonosor (Nebuchadnezzar), Malachias, Joachim, Sibilla Hellespontia, Balthasar etc. Shaffer has illustrated her monograph with reproductions of woodcuts taken from the first edition of the Chronicle in the copy owned by Benjamin and Geraldine Kelly. Margaret Stillwell allowed the use of her census of the various Chronicle printings in America, which was updated by Shaffer. There is a neat ownership stamp on the front free end paper, and a light offset from a newspaper article on pp. 36-37. (The article has been placed into a mylar sheaf and preserved as it discusses a later edition of the Chronicle from 1970. ) Traces of wear to the edges else this is a near fine copy. With the presentation inscription of the author to collector Robert B. Honeyman whose collection of American Pictorial Material is one of the premier pictorial collections held at the Bancroft Library. Disbound and Dispersed, No. 103.
