Three Comedies.
London: Longmans, Green and Co., , 1912. Translated from the Danish by Lieut.-Colonel H. W. L. Hime (Late) Royal Artillery. Octavo, original greyish-green cloth, title gilt to spine. Spine sunned, light shelf-wear, mild toning, else very good. First edition in English. Holberg was a Dano-Norwegian essayist, philosopher, historian and playwright of the 18th century. He has been described as "the Molière of the North" and the "father of Danish literature," and was one of Ibsen's favourite authors. Holberg is particularly noted for the satirical comedies that he wrote for the Danish Theatre in Lille Grønnegade, Copenhagen, three of which are offered here. The translator, Lieut.-Col. Hime, is an interesting figure, the author of professional works on artillery, gunpowder and army reform; a history of the Royal Artillery; papers on quaternions and anharmonic co-ordinates; a study of the "Greek materials of Shelley's 'Adonais'" and a biography of 'Lucian, the Syrian Satirist.' With the red inked ownership inscription of another military polymath, J. F. C. Fuller, to the front free endpaper.
