La Découverte de l'Empire de Cantahar
4 p.l., 373, [3] pp. Small 8vo, cont. red morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, fleur de lis in corners, spine gilt, a.e.g. Paris, P. Prault, 1730. First edition of this rare imaginary voyage to the utopia of the empire of Cantahar, an unknown land near the Cape of Good Hope. It is a country of justice and goodness governed by the much-loved prince, Kincadior, with free marriages, no required dowries, an army of women, etc. Of course, this utopia presents a veiled plan for the reform of French society. Fine copy in contemporary red morocco. 19th-century book plate of "Faivre, D.M." From the library of Édouard Martellière with his engraved bookplate.
