London : George Allen, 1898 1st edition of this work with Chris Hammond's illustrations. Chris Hammond, born Christiana Mary Demain Hammond, illustrated a number of works including 2 other Austen titles. She abbreviated her name to enable her to compete in what was a male-dominated market. With gilt decorated boards and spine; half title; frontispiece with tissue guard; decorative title page; introduction by Joseph Jacobs; text and numerous black and white illustrations. All page edges gilt. The binding has a bright front board with slight surface rubbing, and a slightly dulled spine. The back board has very slight rubbing and slight marking. The spine has light pulling. There is slight wear to the front spine joint and to corners and the spine is slightly cocked. There is decorative bookplate of the Ruskin Library to the front pastedown. The contents are in very good clean condition. There is some browning to the tissue guard and some light foxing to the title page. Otherwise clean bar the occasional small mark.
