God's Fool: A Koopstad Story By Maarten Maartens [pseud]
London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1892, 1892. First edition. Sadleir 1466; Wolff 424. Very good copy. NUC records three copies (NcU, IEN, IU).. 3 vols, 8vo, original green cloth (Mudie's label on each front board; bindings somewhat worn and cocked), gilt lettering. A Dutch author who wrote in English, and whose realistic tales of Dutch life made him one of the most popular late Victorian novelists. God's Fool is the most striking in his series of Koopstad stories, all of which chronicled middle-class Dutch characters. Here, the title character is a brain-damaged boy named Elias who is cheated out of inheritance by his brothers. "The highly unusual conception of the hero is strikingly done but the novel provoked charges of blasphemy" (Sutherland, Victorian Fiction).
