Full Page Automobile Ad: THE FRANKLIN WINS, Los Angeles to Phoenix Race, 1912
A full page ad for the Franklin car measuring "18 x 22". George Hageman, Distributor of the Franklin for Arizona, 2nd Street and Adams, Phoenix. One of the great early races occurred in Arizona's first year as a state. An air-cooled Franklin, driven by the legendary Ralph Hamlin, covered a distance of 511 miles over horrible roads to defeat the Mercedes, Cadillacs, Buicks and other cars whose builder had held the air-cooled variety as unproven. Although the tradition had started five years earlier, this was considered a remarkably fast time. The purse was over $5,000 most of which was put up by the Maricopa Auto Club of Phoenix. A very nice copy in protective plastic with pink accent. Also of interest on the verso of the newspaper has many other contemporary car ads for the 1913 Overland Model 69T, the RE0 [Oldsmobile) and a small ad for a Studebaker [horse-drawn] wagon showing the rise of the automobile and the passing of the older technology, the wagon at Goldman & Company.
