Messieurs Les Anglais. Dessins de E. Thà lem.
1902 - Oblong 4to., in original red cloth over bevelled boards with titles in gilt and large pictorial decoration in gilt and colours. 43 printed pages, with chromolithographs on every page, and text on alternate pages. Boards rubbed and worn with a little loss at head and foot of spine. First edition of this satire on Edwardian England. A sly peek at English traits and foibles from across the Channel, this book also serves as an excellent template for the styles and appearances of English clothing in the Edwardian era. This copy is accompanied by an English translation of the French text, pp.82 loose leaves, with the translation interleaved with copies of the original text and illustrations. [also with] A 29 page copy typed draft for an Introduction to an English version of the book written by Bevis Hillier. Hillier had come across a copy of this book and was enchanted by it. "I soon conceived the idea of a facsimile with a full English translation interleaved and with an Introduction to put the work in context, to confirm some of Sergius's statements and challenge or refute others". Sadly the project did not come to fruition but we are pleased to offer Hillier's copy of the book with his draft Introduction and a copy of the prototype interleaved translation.
