Tractatus De Morbis Cutaneis
1777 - [LORRY, Anne Charles]. Tractatus De Morbis Cutaneis. Paris: P. Guillaume Cavelier, 1777. Quarto, contemporary full tree calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, marbled boards. $1850.First edition of the first book published in France on dermatology."Lorry is regarded as the father of French dermatology". His most important work is his Tractatus, in which he attempted the classification of diseases on the basis of essential relations, their physiological, pathological, and etiological similarities. It is the first modern text on the subject" (Garrison and Morton 3983). He was the first to classify the skin as a distinct, living organ of the body and to connect its well-being to one's general health as well as to localized skin afflictions. "The spirit and general recommendations of the master's magnificent effort, especially in matters of management, the emphasis on the importance of diet and nutrition, and so forth, exerted a powerful influence on the dermatology of France and to a lesser extent of England for many decades to come" (Crissy & Parrish). Text in Latin. Norman 1392. Wellcome III, 547. Text generally fine. Handsome contemporary binding with one minor abrasion to front board and expert restoration. A near-fine copy of this rare and important work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
